Anwar: Preservation Encompasses Identity, Tradition, Language And Arts

Preservation Efforts Integral To Nation-Building, Fostering Unity

PUTRAJAYA, Feb 15 (Bernama) -- The government is committed to preserving the unique cultural heritage of Sabah and Sarawak as it is an integral part of nation-building and fostering unity among Malaysians, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He said the preservation efforts encompass not only physical heritage such as historical buildings and artefacts, but also intangible heritage like customs, traditions, languages, performing arts and traditional knowledge. "The preservation is essential to ensure continuity of our diverse cultural heritage which reflects the rich tapestry of our nation," he said when officiating the launch of the National Cultural Policy (DAKEN) 2023-2030 at the Perdana Putra building here today. Culture, he said, is a powerful force for social cohesion and unity as it transcends all boundaries, including race, religion and socio-economic background. "By embracing and celebrating our cultural diversity, we strengthen our sense of belonging and foster mutual respect among all Malaysians," he said. Anwar said the DAKEN 2023-2030, which was approved by the Cabinet on Dec 21 last year, outlines seven strategic thrusts, including strengthening the preservation and conservation of cultural heritage, empowering cultural industries and enhancing international cultural cooperation. He said the government will allocate the necessary resources to ensure the effective implementation of the policy. "I urge all relevant parties, including government agencies, cultural organisations and the community, to work together to ensure the success of DAKEN 2023-2030," he said. He said the National Heritage Department (JWN) has been tasked with the responsibility of monitoring and coordinating the implementation of the policy. JWN director-general Mesran Mohd Yusop, in his speech earlier, said DAKEN 2023-2030 is a comprehensive policy that takes into account the changing cultural landscape and the need to adapt to new technologies. He said the policy will serve as a guide for all stakeholders in the cultural sector to work together to preserve and promote the nation's cultural heritage. The launch of DAKEN 2023-2030 was attended by Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, ministers and deputy ministers. -- BERNAMA
