Yellowjackets' Showrunners Explain That Wild Premiere Twist

The Showtime series creators break down that shocking moment.

The first season of Showtime's Yellowjackets ended with a major cliffhanger when it was revealed that Jackie (Ella Purnell) is still alive.

Now, showrunners Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson are opening up about the decision to keep Jackie alive and what it means for the future of the series.

"We always knew that we wanted to keep Jackie alive," Lyle tells TVLine. "She's such a great character, and we felt like there was so much more story to tell with her."

Nickerson adds that the decision to keep Jackie alive was also a way to subvert expectations.

"We wanted to do something that would surprise the audience," he says. "We wanted to keep them guessing and wondering what was going to happen next."

What does Jackie's survival mean for the future of Yellowjackets?

Lyle and Nickerson say that Jackie's survival will have a major impact on the second season of the show.

"Jackie's return is going to change everything," Lyle says. "It's going to force the other survivors to confront their past and their own demons."

Nickerson adds that Jackie's survival will also open up new possibilities for the show.

"We're excited to explore what Jackie's life has been like since she was rescued," he says. "We're also excited to see how her return will affect the other survivors."

What can fans expect from the second season of Yellowjackets?

Lyle and Nickerson say that the second season of Yellowjackets will be even more intense and suspenseful than the first.

"We're going to be digging deeper into the characters' psyches," Lyle says. "We're going to be exploring the dark side of human nature."

Nickerson adds that the second season will also feature more supernatural elements.

"We're going to be exploring the supernatural aspects of the show more deeply," he says. "We're going to be asking questions about what really happened in the wilderness."

The second season of Yellowjackets is set to premiere in 2023.
