Kitchener approves e-bikes on city-owned trails
Kitchener joins neighboring cities in allowing e-bikes on select city-owned trails.
Council approved a motion on Monday to allow e-bikes on paved trails, multi-use trails, and select unpaved trails in Kitchener parks.
The new bylaw will take effect on May 1, 2023.
Kitchener joins neighboring cities like Waterloo, Cambridge and Guelph in allowing e-bikes on select trails. The move is seen as a way to encourage active transportation and reduce emissions.
E-bikes are bicycles that are equipped with an electric motor that can assist the rider when pedaling. They are becoming increasingly popular as a way to get around town, especially for people who live in hilly areas or who have difficulty pedaling a traditional bicycle.
Under the new bylaw, e-bikes will be allowed on the following trails in Kitchener:
- Iron Horse Trail
- Victoria Park Trail
- Kiwanis Park Trail
- Schneider Creek Trail
- Stanley Park Trail
- Doon Valley Trail
- Laurel Creek Trail
- Walter Bean Trail
- Grand River Trail
- Margaret Avenue Trail
- Highland Road Trail
- Strasburg Road Trail
E-bikes will not be allowed on unpaved trails that are designated for hiking or horseback riding.
The city is also working on developing a network of e-bike charging stations throughout the city.
