Cicadas In Washington Dc

Cicadas to Return to DC in 2038

Brood X to Emerge After 17-Year Absence

The Washington, D.C. region is not expected to see the return of its buzzing cicada population until 2038. Brood X, which caused a stir among residents in 2021, is an underground insect that surfaces every 17 years. In 2024, a different brood of cicadas will emerge in the area.

Emergence Patterns and Distribution

Cicadas are known for their unique emergence patterns. Brood X, in particular, is the largest and most widespread brood in the eastern United States. Once they emerge, they typically remain active for several weeks, during which time they mate and lay eggs before dying.

The exact timing and distribution of the 2038 emergence is still uncertain. However, scientists predict that they will emerge in May or June in the following areas:

  • Washington, D.C.
  • Maryland
  • Virginia
  • Pennsylvania
  • New York
